  Preface

  Sometimes telling a story in prose form is time consuming. Whenever I feel that, I try my hand in poetry. We all live in some types of illusions in our day to day life. Recently, I have developed an illusion that I can also write poems expressing my mind to the readers. My illusions have been reinforced by some 'Wow' comments made by some readers when some of the poems were posted on FB. Under the seize of that illusion I am publishing my 'Third Attempt'.

  The Poet

  Love at first sight

  (This is written when my youngest daughter became 18)

  Few years back,

  In a cloudy day of a hot summer,

  I met her for the first time;

  Crying for food and cover!

  She was stark naked;

  Not even a thread covered her tiny body;

  I fell in love with her;

  On the very first sight of her tiny eyes!

  Her reddish body captured my imagination of an angel;

  Ready to fly in a garden of blue petals!

  Her infectious smile made me happy even in cloudy nights;

  Her cry for no reason made me tizzy in bright sunshine!

  Her first step to freedom;

  Her first word for eloquence;

  Put me in the seventh heaven!

  Her first day to school was a mystery for me;

  I was 2000 km away from her

  Attending sundry duties in my office!

  I do not know when she became

  From a height of two feet to five feet four!

  Someone consoled me;

  Daughters grow like?

  Prices of essential commodities in Indian markets!

  For me still she is a baby doll;

  Kept in wardrobe of my heart;

  Ready to attend all her small demands!

  She is not growing;

  At the same speed;

  As my love grows for her!

  She is my little daughter;

  For others she is a girl of eighteen;

  Eligible for a driving license;

  Eligible to elect the public representatives!

  But for me still she is the little angel,

  Away from the complexity of life;

  Looking for my helping hand;

  To solve her problems of mathematics and her life!

  She is my little lovely daughter forever!!!!!!

  India: My Beloved Country

  (written on 70th Independence Day)

  She might be the eldest daughter of mother earth;

  Some called her the oldest civilization.

  But she had to change her attire many times;

  I was told!

  The latest being before 69 years ago;

  Today is the 70th Birth day with her new tri coloured dress.

  I knew her when her new attire was yet to complete her 20th year!

  She was the most beautiful;

  Most accommodating daughter on the earth!

  She is the most peaceful;

  Most tolerant daughter on the earth!

  Hope

  She will be the most powerful;

  Richest daughter on the earth;

  Without losing any of the qualities;

  She is already having!

  Story of a Broken Piece of Brick

  I was trying to reinforce;

  The building that was standing thousands of years;

  Withstanding the menace of rats from inside;

  And attacks from wild animals living outside.

  The building belongs to few brothers;

  They love each other very much;

  They ignored for a division;

  Suggested by many neighbours.

  When I tried to reinforce the building;

  I found a piece of broken brick;

  Soaked with human blood!

  The moment I picked it up;

  It started telling me a story;

  Of human tragedy!

  In thousand years of history;

  The brothers made many followers;

  To follow decent and peaceful lives of their own.

  But some of them started thinking,

  They are better than the others;

  Other also started thinking,

  Their followings are better than the rest.

  One group of followers try to impose;

  Their thinking on others.

  No group think they are inferior;

  Every group thought,

  They are the wisest.

  Compassion became the only victim;

  Of their arrogant thoughts.

  Streets became war zones;

  Fighting each other;

  Everyone is after blood of another one.

  Someone picked me up;

  Used as a deadly missile to hit someone;

  Unknown to him;

  Thinking him from the enemy group!

  I hit the man on his forehead,

  First time I was soaked with his blood.

  In thousand years;

  I had hit many;

  Every time I was soaked with blood!

  I am not sure;

  Blood of which group I am carrying!

  Colour of all the blood I have soaked with;

  Is red and only red!!!!!!!

  Fire in the Winter

  A tulip told me in a cloudy morning;

  When I met her waiting for a red rose.

  I wanted to be fire in the winter,

  I wanted to be ice in the summer.

  God has a different idea;

  He made me ice in the winter,

  And fire in the summer!

  My efforts are demeaned;

  My love is ignored.

  My innocence is termed as foolishness;

  My calmness is read as lack of braveness.

  But I am a fighter;

  I shall always try to be fire in the winter;

  I shall always try to be ice in the summer!

  I told the tulip;

  It is nothing new to me!

  Tulip does not have thorns;

  A red rose has;

  Still red rose is plucked by human!

  Tulip smiled to me meaningfully;

  Shunned her unhappy moods forever!!!

  Rainbow

  A piece of black cloud with lightening white just below,

  Fast approaching me,

  With the sharpness of Cupid's arrow;

  Makes me doubtful about my future!

  I take cover under the quilt;

  Closing my eyes,

  Following the footsteps of the proverbial rabbit;

  Who tried to escape from the burning eyes of the King of the jungle!

  Closing my eyes;

  I can see the eyes of a fearful deer;

  Scanning my heart and soul!

  Opening my eyes,

  I can see the smoothness of a billiard board;

  That makes me tizzy!

  I want to touch the sweetness of the morning sun;

  I want to hold the evening fragrance!

  Is it just an illusion of a teen-aged boy;

  Roaming carelessly in an open field;

  Scattered in the countryside of an unknown country?

  Time is not always the Best Healer

  At a height of 40000 feet;

  My hea
rt was fluttering;

  At the very thought of meeting;

  My teen aged princess of the past!

  She was the princess for many;

  I was a mere shepherd;

  Having no right even to love silently!

  For many of us,

  Lesser mortal like the proverbial shepherd;

  Epitomised what a beauty she is!

  She was supposed to greet me;

  With a bouquet of smiling flowers,

  As the guest of honour;

  For the function she had been organising for months.

  She might be wearing a silk sari,

  draping her slim body,

  With the killing smile on her face!

  She made a call,

  At the stroke of midnight;

  Just to tell me;

  She would not address me as 'sir';

  But as 'Dada' like in college days!

  I still vividly remember;

  I could not muster the courage to

  Say the princess a simple 'Hello',

  In my entire college days!

  As soon as I de-boarded from the plane;

  I saw a hefty queen;

  Surrounded by a number of subjects;

  With a bouquet of fresh flowers in her hand!

  I could not find the princess,

  My ultimate beauty;

  Anywhere near the bulky queen.

  'Hi beauty, still as beautiful as our college days'

  I told the bulky queen!

  'You became as old as an old hack!

  But as eloquent as our college days;

  For which we lesser mortal vying to die!

  Still you are the evergreen eloquent prince;

  Who can even buttress a maid in distress,

  To feel herself like a princess of a marry land!'

  'But I never talked to you;

  Throughout my college days;

  Due to fear of uncertainty!

  Though I would have loved to talk;

  Every time I came across;

  I have to confess, thousand times!'

  With the killing smile;

  Sprinkling salt to my never-healed wound,

  She said,

  I still use to talk with my prince;

  In my dream as a teen aged girl of college days!!!!!

  Dog's life

  May I help you sir?

  I looked back to the source of a sweet voice.

  A beautiful girl,

  Wearing a dress much below her size;

  Exposing her curves to the discomfort of the customers;

  Following the dictates of the owner of the shop;

  Wearing a beautiful artificial killing smile;

  Asked me with a voice as sweet as possible.

  I asked her to tell me,

  Where I shall get maximum discount;

  As a typical Babu of government of India.

  It is wine;

  Where you can try your luck sir;

  She told with another killing smile.

  Smiling back, I told her;

  I am going to a place where;

  Good people cannot drink.

  As you know; for a bad person,

  There is no restriction anywhere in the world!!!

  Then try some chocolates,

  She said with the same killing smile.

  I looked at her eyes for the first time;

  Her eyes were betraying her beautiful smile

  And her forced positive body language;

  That I could read clearly.

  What is the matter?

  Why you are looking so sad?

  I asked her.

  I am not supposed share;

  My personal information to a customer;

  Looking downwards she murmured.

  Sharing sorrow is not sharing information;

  Do not worry, I am not going to ask you;

  Where is your residence!

  Neither I shall ask you what is your name!

  Still not convinced, she was looking to the ground.

  I realized she wanted to stop the flow of tears;

  Blocked by her sense of duties!

  I am like your father;

  You can share your sorrow with me, my child!

  I told to the depressed girl.

  I lost my father yesterday;

  I cannot afford a pay-cut;

  That is why I am here even today!

  She said with a choked voice.

  My three siblings are dependent on me,

  We lost our Mom few years back;

  My father had fallen sick after her death;

  He suffered few years on bed!

  I cannot afford a pay-cut;

  I am in debt up to the neck!

  She murmured again.

  How much you are going to lose;

  If you are on leave for three days;

  I asked.

  Net 1500 Rupees;

  Which is too much for me.

  I could see some tears in her eyes.

  I put two thousand in her hand;

  Which she refused to take.

  I only take help from God;

  Not anyone else;

  People try to take only advantage of a young girl

  In the name of some sympathy;

  Thrown to a poor girl,

  Like peanuts are placed in a bottle;

  To catch unsuspecting monkeys!

  She said sternly.

  You are right my child,

  But God never comes to you;

  He chooses someone to help you;

  God is great, he had chosen me to help you today!

  I am not helping you;

  I am only blessed today by Him;

  Do not deprive me

  Of being blessed by Him!

  I shall not tell my name,

  I shall not give my address to visit!

  I shall leave the shop to take my flight;

  To a place where good people are not allowed to drink.

  We shall never meet again!

  I assured her.

  Only I want to meet your owner;

  Before I finally leave your shop;

  To request him to give you at least two day's leave;

  To perform last rites of your father;

  Without a cut from your salary;

  Or otherwise taking his account number,

  To deposit two days' salary for your leave!

  Reluctantly she took my money and told;

  But, I am sorry sir!

  He is not available today!

  His dog, Rocky also died yesterday.

  He is not coming tomorrow as well,

  He will mourn Rocky's death for two full days!!!!!!!!

  Want to see a Rainbow

  As a young boy of five;

  I wanted to see an earth quake!

  My parent could not show me an earth quake;

  As it cannot be seen!

  But I was adamant;

  So they tried to show me the effect of an earth quake;

  By sending our servant, Bhumi to under the bed;

  To shake the bed where I was lying!

  I got the taste of an earth quake;

  Albeit artificially!

  Naturally as I grow old;

  Neither I want to see

  Nor want to feel the effect of an earth quake!

  We can see a rainbow;

  Which gives us immense pleasure!

  When we were young,

  We used to run out of our houses;

  Just to take a glimpse of a rainbow!

  But now we do not want to see a rainbow;

  As we grow old!

  It does not give the excitement;

  What we used to get as a young one!

  To see or not to see,

  Nature will create rainbow for you!

  It is your choice to be happy or not be;

  To see or not see a rainbow in the sky!

  You can see a rainbow;

  In the faces of your loved ones;

  By doing something good;

  Which you are always trying!

  We can see a rainbow in the face of a young;

  Who may not be related to you;

  By doing something good to her;

  Or to him!!!

  By providing a full belly of rice;

  When he is hungry;

  Are we not able see a rainbow on his face?

  Are we not able see a rainbow on her face;

  By giving annual college fees for her higher studies?

  Have we ever tried to see rainbows in their faces????????
